Mayrise mobile mapping system helps Balfour Beatty boost performance

October 27, 2009 -- A new PDA based field mapping innovation from Mayrise Systems is helping Balfour Beatty WorkPlace achieve improvements in performance, gains in operational efficiency and reduction in costs across it’s UK Private Finance Initiative (PFI) street lighting contracts. Since the introduction of MAYRISE Mobile for Street Lighting, Balfour Beatty WorkPlace has seen a significant reduction in penalties relating to the timely completion of fault repairs, an average of 30% less repeat visits, together with a decrease in paperwork and administration.

With combined contract values in the region of GBP 198 million, Balfour Beatty is responsible for more than 115,000 existing street lights and signs. Running on HP Ipaq 2400 series PDA devices, the MAYRISE system is helping Balfour Beatty WorkPlace’ (the Balfour Beatty company which provides integrated facilities management services) engineers locate and identify faulty units with an integrated, easy to use mapping function. This in turn has reduced the time spent looking for a specific unit and the number of aborted jobs caused by the inability to identify the unit correctly.

Instant access to detailed service and fault history together with in depth asset information including source of supply and full component breakdown has further improved the efficiency of Balfour Beatty WorkPlace service operations. “Being able to tap into a detailed service history and unit inventory for each and every piece of equipment has played an important part in the diagnosis of some of the more difficult or intermittent faults and contributed to a 30% reduction in repeat visits,” commented Paul Stoddart, Systems, Planning and Asset Manager for Balfour Beatty Street Lighting PFI Business.

MAYRISE Mobile for Street Lighting, together with bespoke monitoring software developed by Balfour Beatty WorkPlace, has also helped dramatically reduce penalties relating to the timely remediation of faults. Job tickets are automatically allocated, complete with service priorities and closure dates and paperwork is no longer susceptible to water damage or loss!

“The return on investment is easy to calculate with the reduction in penalties alone easily covering the initial outlay for both software and hardware in a relatively short space of time” continued Stoddart. “However, it is important to not only consider the financial benefits of the system. Improvements in performance of lighting stock and operational efficiencies reported against KPI’s have been positively received by our clients.”
