New High-Performance LED Drivers From Toshiba Produce Superior Illumination on Consumer Electronics Displays

8-Channel Constant Current LED Drivers Continue Company's Pursuit of Excellence in Display Viewing

SAN JOSE, Calif., Oct. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Toshiba America Electronic Components, Inc. (TAEC)*, a committed leader that collaborates with technology companies to create breakthrough designs, today expands its light emitting diode (LED) driver product family with two new high-performance devices. The TB62777FNG and TB62778FNG devices are 8-channel, constant current LED drivers delivering a continuous current that can be regulated for superior illumination in the back-lighting of LCD panels, TV displays and notebook PCs, as well as light control for large RGB panel LED displays.

According to Andrew Burt, vice president of the Imaging and Communications Marketing Group in the ASSP Business Unit at TAEC, "Our LED driver additions affirm our commitment to develop products that enhance the end-user experience. Consumers today expect the displays on their TVs, PCs and monitors to provide crisp vivid images without fluctuations in brightness and quality. Toshiba will continue to deliver the technology required to keep the displays on consumer electronic products shining brightly."

Product Benefits

The TB62777FNG and TB62778FNG are 8-channel, constant current LED drivers with serial-in/serial-out data transfer for dynamic displays. The LED drivers support a 3.3V to 5V supply voltage range and regulate the current source through one external resistor. The constant current output range is 5 mA to 40 mA; current settings for the TB62778FNG can be adjusted via a 7-bit serial data input. At an output voltage of 0.4V to 4V, the current accuracy between channels is +/-3% and between ICs, +/-6%. The LED drivers provide IC protection features including thermal shutdown. In addition, the TB62778FNG offers output open detection and output short detection. These modes enable the system designer to identify and capture hardware errors.

The TB62777FNG and TB62778FNG satisfy system requirements for high-speed data transmission. Data exchange for dynamic lighting of LED arrays is done at 25MHz over serial-in/serial-out connections of cascaded drivers. Both the TB62777FNG and TB62778FNG are fabricated using Toshiba's leading edge BiCMOS process. They are housed in a lead-free SSOP16 package with compact dimensions of 4.4mm (W) by 5.5mm (L).

Pricing and Availability

Samples of Toshiba's TB62777FNG are now available, and the devices are $1.20 each in 1,000 unit quantities. The TB62778FNG is also sampling now, priced at $1.32 each in 1,000 unit quantities. Both products are available in the U.S. through Marktech, Toshiba's optoelectronic partner in the U.S. for over 23 years. For more information, please visit http://www.marktechopto.com.
