Wallingford Software releases version 9.0 of InfoWorks

Wallingford, UK -- 19 April 2008 -- Version 9.0 of InfoWorks, released today, provides ample evidence as to why Wallingford Software is widely regarded as the most innovative and technically advanced of all modeling software developers for the water industry. In addition to major developments - such as the ability to model 2D flows using InfoWorks RS - InfoWorks v9.0 includes scores of enhancements that will improve personal productivity and performance. In v9.0 for instance, users can export InfoWorks models and results to Google Earth format for sharing across the Internet.

InfoWorks v9.0 includes a wealth of improvements to all four products: InfoWorks CS for wastewater management and sewerage provision, SD for stormwater, WS for water distribution and supply and RS for river, channel and floodplain flows.

InfoWorks RS

InfoWorks v8.5 saw the launch of 2D simulation for surface flood modeling in InfoWorks CS and SD. In this latest version, the same 2D modeling functionality is extended to users of InfoWorks RS. This means that users will be able to achieve much greater accuracy in the simulation of flow behavior, particularly in areas of complex geometry. As with InfoWorks CS and SD, users of InfoWorks RS can now fully integrate 1D and 2D modeling environments, for instance by using 1D simulation to identify the location of flooding, and 2D to investigate direction and depth of flood flows in specific areas. This can reduce model size and simulation time while improving accuracy of results, thereby improving productivity and reducing costs. Other improvements in InfoWorks RS include the ability to make the import of network objects from other river modelling products much easier.

InfoWorks WS

Wallingford Software has always stressed the importance of making it as easy as possible for users of InfoWorks to import or export data. In InfoWorks WS v9.0 network data can be imported and exported from a wider range other modelling packages, making the transition to InfoWorks WS much easier. InfoWorks WS v8.0 marked the introduction of Land Use Demand functionality. The latest version includes many improvements to Land Use Demand including enhancements to SQL that allow the user to access customer point results in querying, as well as to implicitly join land-use demands with associated polygons. Other changes include the ability to run a simulation for a selected subset of the network, a new simulation option to stop outflow from an empty reservoir, and improvements to the Flushing Scheduler that allows for the automatic definition of pipes for flushing.

InfoWorks CS and InfoWorks SD

Following the major release of 2D simulation for InfoWorks CS and SD in v8.5, improvements in v9.0 have focused on a number of further 2D modelling features and on a variety of usability enhancements. These have included improvements to the Wastewater Profile Editor in CS, new flag fields and the automatic saving of Ground Infiltration conditions when saving the final state of a simulation. In addition the Australian Rainfall Generator model has been added. This model is based on a set of accurate, consistent intensity-frequency-duration (IFD) design rainfall data that has been derived for the whole of Australia.

Common Enhancements

For many users an enduring appeal of InfoWorks is the common interface and functionality that is consistent across all InfoWorks products. Every release of InfoWorks therefore features a large number of improvements common to all products. v9.0 marks the introduction of Tooltip Labels which provide the ability to quickly access information for any object without the need to clutter the model display with labels for all objects or predefine the objects that will be labeled. Since the Tooltip Labels are fully customizable the user can develop different labels to be used with different models or workspaces. A further innovation is the introduction of Network Templates. The user may now specify a database and a network to be used as templates for newly created networks. Any new network that is subsequently created automatically inherits the default values of these templates. This allows the user to carry over some values from one network to another. Finally, amongst a number of significant improvements to the use of Standard Query Language in InfoWorks is a new SQL tool that allows the user to query upstream and downstream from a selected object, link queries on different object types in the same script and establish links to the current time through the NOW() function.

Reflecting on InfoWorks v9.0, Paul Banfield, Wallingford Software’s Sales Director says:  “Yet again our development team has come up with an impressive array of innovations and improvements that will delight users across the world. Each release offers even more compelling reasons to specify InfoWorks, while existing users realize the wisdom of their commitment to the InfoWorks platform. Work is already underway on the next release of InfoWorks later this year, in which we will unveil some really exciting developments of benefit to every user, large and small.”

Each year Wallingford Software issues two major software releases for each product, making InfoWorks the leading software solution for modeling, infrastructure planning and operational management in the water, wastewater and river management sectors. No other software product in the industry benefits from such a high level of ongoing development resource.
