PNM Uses GTViewer to Speed Streetlight Inspections

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.—(BUSINESS WIRE)—January 30, 2008— PNM, a New Mexico electric and gas utility, recently came to Graphic Technologies, Inc. (GTI) when it needed help inventorying its lighting system.

"Accurate records produce accurate billing," said Mike Adams, PNM Lighting Administrator. "We wanted a way to record specific information for each light in the field and then have that information downloaded directly into our mapping system. The program created by GTI worked perfectly. Not only were we able to use the information provided by the inventory to add previously unrecorded lights to our billing system, we were able to confirm that the rate charged for each light was correct."

The program also provided a mechanism to report "day burners" (lights that don't turn off during the day).

"Day burners are a needless expense for electric consumption, and the by products of wasted energy production are detrimental to the environment. It was an added benefit being able to have these lights identified and repaired in mass," said Adams.

Using a simple application built by GTI to run on GTViewer software, PNM completed a street light inspection project ahead of schedule. PNM was able to increase invoices based on correct data, and reduce wasted power.

"We started in April 2007," said Adams. "And we estimated that the project would take 6 months. We were able to finish two months ahead of schedule and now have more accurate records than ever before." Due to the success of the streetlight project, PNM is going to use GTI software to do a system-wide joint use audit.

"It's yet another example of a fast return on investment with one of our mobile applications," said GTI consultant Charlie Marlin. "Our clients typically recover the costs of mobile applications within a single budget cycle."
