Orbit GT Offers Frequent Releases for Managing 3D Data in Smart Organizations

December 14th, 2018 by Susan Smith

Belgian company Orbit GT offers mobile mapping, oblique mapping, indoor mapping, UAS mapping, and 3D mapping.

“I’m happy to announce that version 19.0 is now available for download,” says Peter Bonne, CEO of Orbit GT at the InterGeo Conference 2019 held in Germany. With the advent of the smart city, Bonne says that 3D data is destined to be used throughout organizations.

“We have a release almost every month, as with the cloud we can release and refresh frequently. Our cycle is higher- this rev brings more opportunities to users. One of the new important elements is organizing data. It is difficult to manage data. We also offer cheaper storage, cheaper user accounts, so there is quite a big spectrum  from the online side.”

On the desktop Orbit GT has new feature extraction tools, bridge clearance, multi-ridge detection automated, and linear referencing, among others. These features are either improved or newly introduced into the desktop software.

The new SDK is up and running, so developers can go and start developing right away. The ArcGIS Pro integration is available, but as there are so many tools out there that Orbit GT can’t provide for specifically, the SDK is able to cover developers for those tools.

“We have agreement with the Singapore Land Authority (SLA), and they’re going to use our cloud environment to exploit their data, within SLA at first and then bring it on board in the different departments and agencies.”

At InterGeo, Orbit GT demonstrated is Mobile Mapping System that was presented for the first time, with partner Mitsubishi.

How are Orbit GT solutions different? “Using smart city as an archetype, it’s also about smart organizations, 3D data is becoming inevitable,” says Bonne. “When you manage you have to manage land and people. For both things you need good 3D data. We think it’s obsolete to have one silo of hardware and a data producer, it doesn’t make sense if you’re a government. You have to be sure as an end user that software is capable of managing all that.”

In contrast Orbit GT can combine mobile mapping, oblique cameras, indoor mapping that can combine imagery with lidar, bathymetry with thermal imagery, we bring that all together in a single interface to exploit data in one reality capture system.

The office in Singapore is the result of Orbit GT wanting to be closer to its global partners. The company looks forward to expanding offices into other countries including the U.S.

“Our customers can now immediately take advantage of new features and updates.  This release includes all 3D Mapping products and offer a wide range of new and improved functionalities,” says Bonne.

3DM Feature Extraction portfolio contains a Basic, Standard and Pro version, each offering new features and enhancements to existing tools.  3DM Content Manager and the free Upload tool also got a great update.

Main new features are :

  • Automated Ground Control Point detection
  • Automated multi-ridge detection
  • Automated Bridge clearance
  • Automated Tree inventorisation
  • Slope measurements
  • Linear Referencing
  • Additional measurement techniques
  • Various improvements and fixes

An update for Orbit GT’s SaaS platform was announced earlier this year at the Smart City Expo and World Congress in Barcelona. This update added visualization and usage of textured meshes, use of DEM’s to drape terrain imagery, and many other new features.

3D Mapping Cloud is the one-stop software solution to exploit all types of reality capture content.  By adding Textured Meshes, interpretation of various content becomes even easier for the non-trained eye.

Highlights of new features are :

  • Support for meshes (unlimited and streaming)
  • Support for DEMs
  • Drape flat imagery on DEMs
  • Include annotations in Bookmarks !
  • Many operation improvements on data management and viewing experience

The Ordnance Survey is an existing Orbit user, and with their partner LandScope they were able to supply 3D Mobile Mapping data to supplement their existing model in order to fully visualize, assess and extract highway infrastructure assets, complete with full attribution intelligence for rapid GIS modeling and smart city modeling.

In Hong Kong, Orbit GT has been executing some pilot projects together with Ambit, and partner Vexcel. These projects implement a combination of StreetView, Backpack and aerial captured data.  The Orbit suite offers a perfect solution to match everything together and share the Reality Capture to a wider audience.

Indoor mapping is essential in airports. Orbit GT partner X-Spatial manages the indoor project at Los Angeles Airport (LAX) which requires Orbit GT software and built-in workflows to provide information quickly, update data when changes occur easily, and combine advantages of visualized data and understand the underlying data layers that benefit all stakeholders.
