City of Berkeley Enlists Farallon Geographics to Migrate to Esri LGIM and Leverage Off-the-Shelf Services, Applications and Workflows

San Francisco, CA, Sep 21, 2016 -- Farallon Geographics worked with the City of Berkeley to migrate their GIS from a legacy data model to Esri’s “Local Government Information Model” (LGIM). Farallon assisted the City’s GIS staff with LGIM strategic planning and provided the technical expertise necessary for an efficient migration.

Farallon was selected for this project because of its wide experience in LGIM strategic planning, migration, customization and application integration including solution development for various California municipalities including City of Foster City, Town of Danville, City of Walnut Creek and Tulare County.

For the City of Berkeley project, Farallon first developed a matrix that specified how feature classes in the legacy data model should be “mapped” into the LGIM. The process of moving data from one database to another is called “ETL” (Extract, Transform, and Load).  It involves reading data from a source data set, transforming the data into a structure and/or format that is consistent with a target database, and populating the target database with the re-formatted data content.

During this analysis, Farallon also identified legacy source data and classes that would not naturally map into the off-the-shelf LGIM. In these cases, Farallon and the City worked together to construct enhancements to the LGIM to support Berkeley’s unique needs.

Based on this analysis, Farallon delivered an ETL script, verified the integrity of the transformed data and deployed the populated LGIM database to the new server architecture and geodatabase.
