Third Wave Systems to demonstrate new features and user enhancements at IMTS

Gear Machining, Suggested Optimization Value and more features will be released to enhance user experience and improve machining processes

MINNEAPOLIS, MINN. Aug 25, 2016 – For more than 20 years, Third Wave Systems has been developing ways to deliver solutions for the most complex engineering problems. At IMTS the machining solutions provider will be exhibiting the latest in machining modeling technology focused on reducing setup and analysis time, increased ease of use, improved CAM interfaces and new process support.

The development team at Third Wave Systems has been working to create a gear machining modeling capability for AdvantEdge, the company’s finite element analysis software. This will allow gear manufacturers to understand and improve machining processes through simulation of chip formation, in-process stresses and heat flow into the tool and workpiece. Understanding these effects enables users to reduce cycle time and increase tool life while reducing overall production costs. Attendees interested in gear machining are encouraged to stop by to discuss gear machining needs, sign up for a Beta version and get updates on the current development status.

To make the finite element analysis of metal cutting easier, Third Wave Systems added a results analysis wizard and automated report generation capability within AdvantEdge.  The new results analysis wizard guides the user through their simulation data, providing suggestions of important variables for study and text to aid the experienced and novice finite element user in their decision making.  The wizard captures images and user input text which can be used to automatically generate a report in both PDF and HTML formats for easy communication of simulation data and conclusions.

Also new in AdvantEdge, the finite element analysis of both sawing and broaching is now available. Users can now easily setup, simulate and analyze results for multi-tooth band sawing or keyway broaching processes. The simulation results, including forces, temperature and stress, allow for better understanding of chip formation, the force on each tooth over time and the effect of machining on the tool and finished workpiece. This information enables off-line investigation of new ideas prior to prototyping, competitive analysis, exploring the use of existing technology for machining new materials and troubleshooting problems.

“We are always hard at work developing new ways to improve the user experience for our customers and coming up with new ways to solve manufacturing problems efficiently and affordably,” Kerry Marusich, Third Wave Systems President, said. “We look forward to IMTS every time we exhibit. It’s one of the greatest trade shows in our industry and we are looking forward to showing attendees all of the new capabilities we have developed since the last show in 2014.”

For whole part improvements, Third Wave Systems develops an NC optimization software, Production Module, that allows users to optimize their machining processes and save on trial-and-error testing. Users routinely achieve an improved cycle time of more than 20 percent for turning and 25 percent for milling while proving both tool life and part quality for some of the most difficult-to-machine materials. The latest improvement to Production Module includes the Suggested Optimization Value feature. Following the initial force profile simulation, this new feature suggests values to be used for optimization, enabling users to get a head start on the analysis and reduces the time to optimize each part.

For IMTS attendees who are Siemens NX, Matercam or CATIA users and have not seen Third Wave Systems’ interfaces for these CAM products, should visit Third Wave Systems to get a demonstration of the software and see how Production Module is able to seamlessly transfer data from Siemens NX and Mastercam to optimize and transfer the data back to the original part and get products to market faster.

Third Wave Systems will have its applications engineering team at IMTS to answer questions about machining challenges and provide demonstrations of the solutions and services Third Wave Systems delivers. Visit either booth or set up a meeting in advance by emailing Email Contact
