AeroMetric Provides Illinois Tollway with a High Accuracy Mapping LiDAR First

Sheboygan, Wisconsin, September 20, 2011 – AeroMetric has completed 36 miles of High Accuracy Mapping along I-88 for the Illinois Tollway. I-88 is undergoing a mill and resurfacing program, and the design engineers required a high precision base map to prepare their construction documents. By employing a helicopter mapping solution, AeroMetric offered the team a creative and innovative approach to transportation corridor surveying. This is the first time the Illinois Tollway has used helicopter-based high accuracy mapping LiDAR technology for a corridor survey. This solution will encourage transportation authorities nationwide to make use of leading edge technology when mapping their corridors.

“Conducting the survey from the air enabled the Tollway to avoid traffic disruptions and also ensured the safety of the survey team. In addition, High Accuracy Mapping provided for rapid completion of the work. The use of a helicopter platform enabled the team to capture LiDAR data sets from a low altitude with great precision, dispensing with the need for traditional field surveying,” said Jeff Stroub, AeroMetric vice president.

AeroMetric served as a consultant to the design engineer, RS&H of Naperville, Illinois. "AeroMetric produced a high accuracy aerial survey for the Illinois Tollway project more efficiently than we would have accomplished with a complete ground survey. Our schedule was accelerated and AeroMetric’s turnaround was excellent—delivering documentation with the precision we anticipated,” said Preston Keefe, PE, vice president of RS&H.

“We found that helicopter platform-based LiDAR was the best way to execute the high accuracy mapping we required, while minimizing roadway disruptions to our Tollway customers. We are very happy with the result of this project,” said Brian Bottomley, PE, senior project engineer with the Illinois Tollway.

Tight and detailed vertical accuracy was the key to the success of the project. AeroMetric used Tuck Mapping Solutions’ state-of-the-art eagleeye® corridor mapping systems. This enabled the team to acquire very low altitude, high accuracy LiDAR data sets, topographic maps, 3D planimetric maps and 3-inch resolution digital orthophoto imagery for the entire corridor.
